Less than amusing ramblings from a jaded former gamer.

Edge of the Galaxies

In June of 2003, LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment released a massive multiplayer online game called Star Wars Galaxies. It was a mess of a game plagued with bugs, delays, balance issues. And in the eight and a half years that followed brought a roller coaster of broken promises and unfulfilled potential before its eventual shutdown. And it was one of the most amazing experiences I ever had playing a video game.

I had planned to explain in greater detail why I found Galaxies so amazing, but I just can’t seem to articulate it very well at this point. Rereading what I’ve tried to write it just sounds boring. Maybe it’s because I don’t like writing for this blog anymore, or maybe I’ve always been boring and I’m just now realizing it (that seems likely). Either way I really don’t seem capable to put how I feel about Galaxies in words.

So I’m going to do something else. When I used to play Ultima Online, one of the grandaddies of the MMO genre, I enjoyed visiting players’ homes because I felt it was a good way to get a feel for someone’s experiences with a game. What they take time putting on display and how they set it up seemed to say a great deal about them and what the game meant for them.

After playing Ultima Online and seeing what people did with their homes, I went into the Galaxies with a dream of making a museum. Something that expressed the breadth and depth of my experiences with Star Wars Galaxies. With this post, you can judge if I accomplished that or not, as I’ll just let these images speak for themselves, for better or for worse.

Three things I learned from this post:
    1) It looks like you could do some amazing stuff in this game.
    2) I don’t know much about SW (I watched the movies, and that’s about it), but it seems that fans could appreciate the themes and sections – the Rebel vs Empire section was kinda neat.
    3) You really put a lot of time in things you do, as nerdy as they may be.
