Seeing as we’re in a new year and possibly a new gaming generation, I figured now is a good time to look back on what games from the last few years really defied my expectations. Either because they went above and beyond what I was expecting of them or because they were horrible letdowns that made me feel stupid for buying them. Today’s surprise is Team Fortress 2, probably the only Valve game that I think is genuinely great. (Or thought was great.)

Pointless Achievements: With Friends Like these…

Actually anyone who has this achievement probably has no friends.
Or he’s the type of person with 5000 “Friends” on Facebook.

The Orange Box was a unique challenge for achievement hunters such as myself. Thanks in no small part because it has 99 separate achievements. More than I had ever seen in a single XBOX 360 game and quite possibly the maximum allowable number of achievements in ANY XBOX 360 game actually.

But this seemingly massive undertaking becomes a lot more reasonable once you remember the Orange Box is actually a collection of different games. Specifically the story-drive first person shooter Half-Life 2, two expansions packs that continue the story of Half-Life 2 called Episode 1 and Episode 2. The unique first person puzzle game Portal, and lastly a sequel to a popular team based online shooter called Team Fortress 2. Even though I had to do a lot of stupendously pointless and insanely hard bullshit to get every achievement, something about “With Friends Like These” struck me as particularly odd and useless.
