My Biggest Surprises and Disappointments of the Last Gaming Generation Pleasant Surprise: The Beatles Rock Band

Rock and roll all night! ...what? I'm not obliged to make Beatles references. =P

(Insert obligatory Beatles reference here!)

Seeing as we’re in a new year and possibly a new gaming generation, I figured now is a good time to look back on what games from the last few years really defied my expectations. Either because they went above and beyond what I was expecting of them or because they were horrible letdowns that made me feel stupid for buying them. My final surprise for this series is The Beatles: Rock Band, the rock band game born out of a cooperative effort between Harmonix and the Beatles’ music studio, Apple Corps.

Or just bang your fucking head against the wall...

Are we sure this title is an accurate translation? Maybe paradise is Japanese for torturous hell.

Seeing as we’re in a new year and possibly a new gaming generation, I figured now is a good time to look back on what games from the last few years really defied my expectations. Either because they went above and beyond what I was expecting of them or because they were horrible letdowns that made me feel stupid for buying them. Today’s disappointment is the brutally unforgiving Rhythm Heaven, a deceptively cute title that’s more like a condescending music teacher than a fun rhythm game.

If this looks difficult, it’s because IT IS!

A.K.A. HOW EVEN THE SIMPLEST PREMISES CAN CONTAIN AN ABUNDANCE OF ENTERTAINMENT

I was going to talk about how No More Heroes is a satire on everything that is modern games and gamers, but I’m too tired to write a long analysis today. So I’ll just write a clumsy review about another indie game I like that I’m less inclined to analyze (even though it too has story elements open to interpretation).

So yeah, here’s to the fact it’s Friday and I desperately want to go home and sleep all memorial day weekend.
